A Bold Statement in Abstract Expressionism

Untitled (1957) is a vivid and emotionally charged oil on canvas by Tibor, a painter aligned with the New York City School. Though the artist’s full identity remains uncertain, his confident brushwork and textured layering place him firmly within the Abstract Expressionist tradition. The composition emphasizes spontaneity, tension, and immediacy—hallmarks of postwar American abstraction.

Tibor’s signature appears in the lower right corner, anchoring the date and lending further historical context. The painting blends structured motion with layered tonal shifts, revealing depth not just through color, but through the physicality of paint itself.

Tibor and the New York City School

Created in 1957, this painting emerges from a pivotal moment in American art. While figures like Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell dominated museum walls, Tibor worked on a more intimate scale. His focus on density over size suggests a personal exploration rather than a theatrical gesture.

Importantly, Tibor’s use of oil (rather than acrylic) connects his work to an older painterly tradition. This decision enhances the painting’s weight and surface richness, adding gravitas to the tactile experience.
