San Juan de Dios – Granada School, 17th Century
Oil on panel, 19 × 15.5 cm (panel), 28.5 × 25 cm (framed)
Imported from Spain – For sale after cleaning and reframing

This 17th-century oil painting of San Juan de Dios (Saint John of God) originates from the Granada School, a Spanish tradition celebrated for its grace, elegance, and warm color harmonies. Here, the saint appears in quiet contemplation, dressed in a simple brown robe that evokes Franciscan humility. His expression is tender, and the light gently reveals the wear of his garments—humanizing the figure while preserving his sanctity.

Although small in scale, this devotional piece commands presence. The illumination, soft modeling, and emotional depth suggest it was created for personal reflection or perhaps for use in a monastic cell.

Currently, the painting is undergoing conservation. The 19th-century frame will also be preserved with minor restoration. Once complete, this work will be available through our European Art Collection.

The Granada School rose to prominence after Alonso Cano returned to the region in 1652. Artists embraced his refined style—idealized figures, clear composition, and a meditative aesthetic. This piece reflects those qualities, especially in its balanced composition and use of warm, earthy tones.

In addition, Flemish devotional imagery shaped Granada’s style, introduced through painters like Pedro de Moya. This painting’s spiritual stillness and inward focus are consistent with the goals of the Counter-Reformation, which favored emotional resonance over spectacle.
